Using Alcohol to Get Rid of Spider Mites

There are a variety of different types of spider mites. The mites can range in colors from a red color to yellowish green. These insects can affect both indoor houseplants and outdoor plants. If an infestation does occur and left unchecked, these infestations will eventually kill or weaken the plants. Infestations can also make the plants susceptible to other types of diseases. It is important to know the signs and respond to them as soon as possible. One of the first visible signs of spider mites is the small white flecks that can be seen on foliage. These white flecks will turn yellow. Sometimes, however, spider mites are almost undetectable with the naked eye, but their web is not. They form tiny webs that look like other arachnids. Sometimes people use different pesticides to kill them but a more natural solution is rubbing alcohol. To use the rubbing alcohol, saturate a cotton ball and rub the solution over the infected areas of the plant. Alcohol will not kill the eggs but it will not kill the adult spider mites, which means the plant should be monitored for additional mites that hatch. If additional mites are identified, reapplying the alcohol and this process will get rid of spider mites within several weeks of application.
